Full tables at the diner, customers elbow to elbow at the counter. There uncomfortable Paul finished his omelet. Fellow lawyer Mort and wife Marna sat to his left, seething, silent over losing in court to Paul.

He needed to break the ice: “Enjoy your breakfast and your day,” open hand extended over Mort’s plate. Mort had to shake: “You too.”

At the register, Paul noticed Marna behind him. “A new grandson. Can’t believe it, a girl so young.”

“You bullshitter!” Laughing.

Good fortune. Paul learned Marna died of heart attack later that afternoon. He had warmed her still beating heart.
