Ira dreaded her voice. “Iris? Why call, sis?”


“Hmmpf. Love you too.” Then business. “Do you remember way back, our grade school piano duo?”


Ira: “Kind of.” Pause. Then: “Mom. . .witch music teacher. . .tough. . . we got it done. . .”


“Thanks, Ira. If you remember, I’m sure it happened.”


“Yeah. United we sat. Bye.” Click.


Ira asked wife Inez: “What was that? Glad I threw in we were in it together.”


“She wanted assurance you remembered doing something with her. It’s a form of caring.”


“Didn’t think I had it in me.”


“Maybe she didn’t either.”
